Die Entwicklung alternativer Reaktorkonzepte, teilweise auch als Reaktoren der vierten Generation bezeichnet, wird im Ausland aktiv vorangetrieben. Diese Konzepte sollen laut ihren Entwicklern in einer Reihe von Merkmalen Vorteile gegenüber Leichtwasserreaktoren aufweisen.
