Julkishallinnon toimistot, koulut, yliopistot, sairaalat, kirjastot ja sosiaalisen asumisen ohjelmat ovat julkisen sektorin suurimpia huonekalujen hankkijoita. Työpaikkojen modernisointitrendit, mukaan lukien siirtyminen joustaviin ja yhteistyöhön perustuviin työtiloihin, muokkaavat huonekaluhankintojen määrityksiä. Julkisten rakennusten remonttiaalto luo kysyntää sekä standardi- että räätälöidyille huonekaluratkaisuille.
Huonekalutoimittajien tulee osoittaa asiaankuuluvien tuoteturvallisuus- ja laatustandardien, ergonomisten suunnitteluperiaatteiden ja ympäristösertifikaattien, kuten FSC-puun alkuperän tai Joutsenmerkin, noudattaminen. Kestävyys, huollettavuus ja kierrätettävyys elinkaaren lopussa ovat tärkeitä arviointikriteerejä julkisissa huonekaluhankinnoissa.
