Inkoop van industriële machines omvat de gespecialiseerde apparatuur die nodig is voor productie-, onderhouds- en infrastructuuractiviteiten in de publieke sector wereldwijd. Onder CPV-divisie 42 omvat deze categorie pompen en compressoren, industriële kleppen, verwarmings- en ventilatieapparatuur, industriële ovens en fornuizen, hijs- en hefwerktuigen, verpakkingsmachines en apparatuur voor water- en afvalwaterzuiveringsinstallaties.
Gemeentelijke waterleidingbedrijven, stadsverwarmingsbedrijven, afvalverwerkingsinstallaties, door de overheid beheerde industriële bedrijven en defensie-instellingen zijn de belangrijkste publieke afnemers van industriële machines. Milieuvoorschriften en klimaatdoelstellingen drijven aanzienlijke inkoop van gemoderniseerde pompsystemen, energiezuinige HVAC-apparatuur en gemoderniseerde zuiveringsinstallatiemachines.
Leveranciers van machines moeten bereid zijn te voldoen aan machinerichtlijnen, uitgebreide technische specificaties te verstrekken, concurrerende berekeningen van de totale eigendomskosten aan te bieden en adequate after-sales ondersteuning te garanderen, inclusief preventief onderhoud, beschikbaarheid van reserveonderdelen en training van operators. Energie-efficiëntie is een steeds belangrijker wordend evaluatiecriterium, waarbij veel aanbestedende diensten methodologieën voor levenscycluskostenanalyse hanteren.
