Gemeentelijke waterleidingbedrijven, stadsverwarmingsbedrijven, afvalverwerkingsinstallaties, door de overheid beheerde industriële bedrijven en defensie-instellingen zijn de belangrijkste publieke afnemers van industriële machines. Milieuvoorschriften en klimaatdoelstellingen drijven aanzienlijke inkoop van gemoderniseerde pompsystemen, energiezuinige HVAC-apparatuur en gemoderniseerde zuiveringsinstallatiemachines.
Leveranciers van machines moeten bereid zijn te voldoen aan machinerichtlijnen, uitgebreide technische specificaties te verstrekken, concurrerende berekeningen van de totale eigendomskosten aan te bieden en adequate after-sales ondersteuning te garanderen, inclusief preventief onderhoud, beschikbaarheid van reserveonderdelen en training van operators.
